Back pain and neck pain are mostly caused by arthritis and inflammation in the joints of the spine. The pain from the joint can be reduced by either injecting anti-inflammatories into, or next to the joint. The image on the left demonstrates the technique for injection into the joint and the technique on the right demonstrates injecting next to the joint. Both are chemical blocks of the pain signal.
There are advantages and disadvantages to each technique and your pain practitioner will choose the option that has the best risk/benefit ratio for you. These blocks are mostly used in confirming the diagnosis and only relieves the pain for a few days/weeks.
