The nerves that carry sensation from the body enter the spinal canal and travel to the brain to report signals that the brain interprets as pain. Joint blocks and denervation treat pain arising in the joints of the spine.
Treating pain that is experienced in the arms, legs and the rest of the body may require blocking a spinal nerve root. Each nerve supplies sensation to a particular part of the body. It is known which nerve supplies which part of the body and it is mapped out as below.
In a spinal nerve root block medication is injected around a specific nerve or nerves, depending on where the pain is experienced by the patient. This is a chemical block. Pain relief may last for weeks/months.
